Burden of Responsibility on Poker Site Owners?

7 August 2008

If you have not yet heard, Bodog Pokers' accounts to the tune of 24million have been seized in the US, and prosecutors have begun numerous lawsuits to seize even more. Some of Bodog's cheques have bounced and many players in the site are now worried about their funds - and justifyably, as there is a likelyhood that even more funds will be seized. The full story can be read in Forbes' Web Magazine Here is the link to the article:
http://www.forbes.com/business/2008/07/30/calvin-ayre-bodog-biz-beltway-cx_jn_wb_0730ayre.html
The dillemma for poker site owners who promote poker sites to poker players is thishould they continue to carry banners and other promotion material, and pretend that there is no danger to the potential visitor to their site in investing funds with poker sites like Bodog Poker? Should a site owner at least refer their readers to the above article and at least give the information to the player, who can then decide the risk for themselves. To do nothing is burying your head in the sand and totally irresponsible. Beside Bodog Poker, there is UBPoker who is currently ongoing internal investigations and looking at their sites' security breaches.

Personally, I believe poker site owners do have a responsibility to inform and to carry products and services that will benefit the visitor and not harm them financially - if there is a problem with a product or service, it is at the minimum their responsibility to let the visitor to the site know this, to give the information and news to the visitor and to let the "informed' player decide to follow up or not follow up the links to a poker site for download. At the maximum, the poker site should remove all links and banners of sites like Bodog which present a danger to the investing poker player

A Scam or Not? by a Noted Poker Authority

26 July 2008
Imagine, you find an interesting Article in a Community of Poker bloggers or Postings. The Article and the site calls itself A Noted Poker Authority. You click on the Article so that you can read it further. The site asks you to register to read their articles. You register and get an e-mail confirmation. You link back to the site, as a confirmed member - AND YOU GET A BILL TO PAY ON YOUR CREDIT CARD if you want to read the articles, and on a monthly recurring charge to boot. We all expect to find advertisements, little promos, all type of inducements to click on something that might make some income for the site owner - this is mosly with no obligation. BUT WE GET TO READ THE ARTICLE WE WERE INTERESTED IN WITH NO OBLIGATION OR STRINGS ATTACHED. What a scam by someone calling themselves "A Noted Poker Authority".  What is his/her real name I wonder? It can't be CHARITY! But it very well could be "Scam Artist".

How to be Dominated and Duped in Poker

2 July 2008

Many of us want to improve our game and we look for ways to do this. One of the ways I have been looking to improve my game is the Training Sites and Poker e-book Trainers. Most of the ones I have discovered are genuinely offering their services with trained and professional coaches and mentors. But there are some wolves-in-sheep-clothing who offer you enticements like the following: "DOMINATE YOUR OPPONENTS" etc etc. Next thing, they offer to let you downlaod their e-book for FREE, just provide them with your e-mail and verify your account and that will be all there is to it. And what do you think you will get? Pages and Pages and Pages of Banner Affiliate Advertising with a few paragraphs of advice and strategies that even your grandmother knew before there was internet poker. Well, it's free, isn't it? Yes it is- but it is not what I asked for!

Sincerely Yours,  Duped Again

Micro MTT at Poker Stars

10 June 2008

The micro level MTT at Poker Stars is full of interesting "characters". I have given them some labels of my own. Let me introduce the "Optomist" - this is a player who will always make large bets pre-flop with mediocre cards like AT and KQ and will continue to bet out even if the Flop did not connect at all. Then there is the "Opportunist"- this is a player who will go all in pre-flop with any low pair, middle pair or better, in other words, someone who will seize the opportunity of holding at least a pair before pre-flop. My favorite is the "Dipper"- this is the player who will make small bets at the Flop when everyone has checked, and then calls if anyone calls his bet. At the micro level, these players rarely change their style of play and can be counted on for a substantial amount of their chips if you apply the right course of action against them - a subject for another time.

The Horror of Spade Club Poker Site

14 May 2008
I strongly recommend AGAINST joining Spade Club; 1) you will spend hours and hours for very little return. 2) You will not have any hand histories 3)You will not have any stats 3) And if you have any money in your account- you will have a very, very difficult time cashing out. They will send you in circles filling out details and confirmation of your "life"; then when you have enough of that, they will tell you that you have to fill out some form that they newer send you. ( A form supposedly to prove that you are who you are etc.) They accept Pay pal as the vehicle to pay them but will not use the same vehicle to pay out. Here is a copy of the Affadavit they ask you to sign to cash out(Why don't they ask you to sign it when you Cash in -what do you think?)

Those Software Helpers

18 March 2008

Today I saw some training videos; most of them showed and used "helpers''- software which showed what the players opponents have done in the past; their win%,the number of hands taken to the river, betting patterns and the like. You know what I mean, you've seen these yourselfe in many a poker video on YouTube and elsewhere. Personally, any software that helps me to analyse my own game and to develop for me my own judgement on a particular and singular situation is the software that does good and is a real helper. The type of software which builds a reliance on statistics and not on observation and judgement, in my opinion, leads nowhere for the poker player.

ART,BUSINESS,AND POKER

9 March 2008

Poker Players come from many backgrounds; the world of music, art, banking,finance,sports,education,medicine....in short, from every imaginable background there is. You only have to watch the WSOP Tournament Televised programmes, and many times you will hear of a new comer from one or another background. "O.K we know all this" (you are saying to yourself....Get to the point!)
Well the point is this; I believe that the style of play of a poker player is influenced by this background more than by any other factor. Now, I said, I believe- no one to my knowledge has done any serious research on this, so I am just 'imagining' this. I have come across bits and pieces of information which does point to my above views. Take the new course in Harvard University as a case in point; they have introduced Poker into the curriculum and quite a few management seminars for business people have also introduced poker for training. Take the many books that deal with the subject of investement and poker. Take the books that deal with "tells" and how to identify players by their language -'I see what you mean', 'I feel that is the right move", 'I knew that is bad move' and so on and on.
For myself, I have chosen to build on my personal background in both the world of art and the world of business investment. Being aware of my background, I can choose my style of play, my tactics, and my strategy. It is my fundamental starting point and the foundation on which to learn to improve my skills in poker. By knowing this, I can save myself a lot of time. I can look for mentors who have similar backgrounds to my own and learn from them how to improve my game.

Poker Tournament Choices

3 March 2008

Bounty Tournaments

The bounty that you could win could be as much as $25,000 dollars, and you win the bounty at anytime in the tournament if you knock out the celebrity or professional who was designated as the one with the bounty on his head. The other form of this type of tournament is when you get a bounty no matter who you knock out of the tournament. Just think about this for a minute-how many times have you knocked out quite a few players only to be on the bubble or worse and not have any return for your efforts; well with a bounty tournament, you will at least get back some of your entry fee if not more than what you bought in for.

New Depositors' Tournaments

This needs little explaining, the only differences in certain sites is the lenght of time this stays valid. Some are a week, some are for longer, some even for a month.

Freeroll Tournaments

This requires no deposit to enter; you play for free and if you are in the money in these tournaments, you can begin to build up your bankroll from your own achievements. Some sites have many of these tournaments a day, some only one a day or even only one a week and some sites have freerolls conditional to you having played a certain number of raked hands. Obviously, if you are thinking of building up a bankroll using freerolls as your vehicle, then you need to choose a site that has the most unrestricted freerolls with the least restrictive conditions.

Private Tournaments

Private Tournaments arranged by my site, as well as poker Forums,Poker Bloggers, and Poker Clubs and Poker Leagues are a more recent feature of the internet poker scene; Most sites do allow private tournaments; however, here too there are major differences in the policy of one site to another -- for example, one will allow private freerolls, or micro-buy-in of $1.oo whereas others will not allow private freerolls without a minimum buy-in of at least $5.oo. Then there are minor differences as to how the tournaments can be reserved and other administrative details which need not concern the players but can be extremely time consuming to the organiser.

The Maniacs' Tournament

2 March 2008

I am waiting for the best today, the beginning of the maniacs' tournament (my nickname for it)  on  i4Poker. This is 18.15 freeroll tournament. Here you can throw out your pair of Aces or any other pair that is higher than a pair of fives. Here only your 82 offsuit will win, or your wide 4 gap connectors unsuited. And the best strategy of all, dont look at your cards, just go all-in every time for the first 10 hands - you will have a tremendous advantage over the field, then just sit out and coast into first place. Roullette-poker at its best every two hours of the day. Watch out for me, I love the madness of it, and I indulge and play all-in every time I get that pair of two's.

Two interesting new ways to increase my bankroll

26 February 2008

On two recent occassions, I found new ways how to increase my bankroll (of course both ways still require that you place in a tournament in the money);  I entered a turbo on PokerStars for the Suday Million Qualifier, entry fee $5 dollars and shared first place and found that the Qualifier was worth an equivalent of $55 in Tournament Money. I decided that is what I would do, accept the Tournament Money which then bankrolled my entry into SitNGos and MTTs . Any winnings in these went straigt into my $account. Then I discovered that I had not used up my FPP (frequent player points) and started entering into FPP buy in tournaments, and again if I did well (which I did in one or two of these) I got real dollars into my account.  It doesnt take a genius to figure out what I've been doing ever since with these FPP points - you guessed it.
